This group concentrates on
suggestions, projects, development ideas and improvements around the
biodiversity and climate action within the community. Our aim is to develop
areas in the village and the locality with native planting and improvements for
local nature, and introduce projects to reduce our climate impact by upgrading
the homes, community buildings and resources of the area.
"Biodiversity refers to the wealth and diversity of all living things – including people, plants, animals, fungi and micro-organisms. County Westmeath has a rich natural heritage supporting a range of diverse species and rich habitats including peatlands, wetlands, rivers, lakes, woodlands, grasslands, eskers and hedgerows".

Late last year a group was formed to apply for information and possible funding with help from Dr. Isabella Donnelly of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) for a Community Energy Master Plan. In essence a snapshot of what our energy use in the village is today and what works an grants are available across homes, businesses, farms, community centres etc. in the locality to improve the energy use and expense while reducing our climate footprint.
The Castletown-Geoghegan Parochial House "Long Garden"
The Parochial house Long Garden (the strip of land on the left as you walk up the driveway to the house) has been cleared of debris, brambles and some invasive species to make way for native biodiverse planting, pollinators, birds, bats and animals. There are provisional drawings and plans for planting, seating and walkways. Bat boxes were installed by our local community that are involved in the mens shed.
